Rock the Shot September Challenge

This shot is my submission for this month’s Rock the Shot Challenge {www.rocktheshotforum.com}. I think it might be my favourite shot I’ve ever taken. The blissed out expression on Justin’s face gives me warm fuzzies every time I look at it. For me it’s a reminder to enjoy those small moments.

Shot using my 35mm f1.8 lens at 1.8, with natural light diffused by a net curtain. For processing I used a combination of my own editing plus a toned down version of The Coffee Shop Blog’s Buttercream black and white action.

Rock the Shot Forum is a fantastic resource for all levels of photographers, with some amazing interviews, giveaways and articles. Click the picture below to check them out

Dandenong Ranges – Grant’s on Sherbrooke

Today I went on an incredibly soothing and relaxing day trip to the Dandenong Ranges – only a forty minute drive away but it felt like a whole other world. Our first stop was Grant’s on Sherbrooke to feed the birds. I’ve been in Australia for two years but the novelty of having wild parrots everywhere still hasn’t worn off. Despite the arctic temperatures and drizzle it was a blast – and being rewarded with a gigantic vanilla slice wasn’t bad either.

This photo is my favourite - Jeremy at one with the birds

Next post I’ll share a few photos from the Rhododendron Gardens – thanks for reading everyone!

Handsome Harry

It recently occurred to me that it has literally been months since I took some proper shots of Harry – terribly neglectful of me! I’ve been so busy that all I’ve had the energy to do is to take the occasional iPhone snap while exhausted on the couch.  Today though all the ingredients were right for a mini shoot – beautiful muted sunlight through the bedroom window and Harry was in the mood to play.

A couple of hints for getting great cat photos – if you use a toy (I use a bendy stick with feathers) try holding it right next to the camera. This way the cat will lock eyes with you and it makes for a striking shot. A word of warning, get out of the way before they pounce!

When photographing your cat, look for colours that will play off their eyes. Our pale green and white bed linen is almost exactly the same colour as Harry’s, this really makes the eyes the focus. If you can’t match, try extreme contrast.

On a slightly different note- my Winter Giveaway is now open for entries! Head on over to my Facebook page to leave yours.
