The Best of August

August has been a month of highs and lows. We found out that the gorgeous Zach from Saffron on the Hill has an aggressive tumour that cannot be cured, which is devastating news. And on Friday we got the horrible news that darling Arnold had passed away suddenly. His owners are grieving very hard for him, and my heart is so sad for their loss.

Arnold

There has also been happiness this month. Our foster kittens both found great homes, with Mr Moo (now called Albie) going to live with a new big sister (also called Moo!) and Justin B staying right here with us and his new best friend Harry. As you can see they are the best of friends and adore each other.

This month I also had the pleasure of photographing Otis, a seventeen year old mini Foxie who is such a character. Apparently he likes nothing more than to run away to the cat shelter down the road and snuggle in front of the heater with the cats.

Adorable little Paddington arrived at Saffron on the Hill and was promptly snapped up by a lovely new family who will spoil him rotten

A bit of rain doesn’t slow this little bundle of energy down

The rest of my August was spent working on my tax return (boo!) and taking time off to visit family back in New Zealand. September is going to be a very busy month, with some really exciting shoots coming up. I’m currently taking bookings for October, email me today to secure a spot.

Our new family member

If you follow me on Facebook you will know about our two foster kittens, Justin B and Mr Moo. These two gorgeous boys had been passed along from foster home to foster home before arriving with us. I pretty much fell in love right immediately, they leapt out of their carrier and made themselves at home straight away. Harry was a little wimp about the situation and spent the first two days hissing and looking concerned, before suddenly realising that the kittens would play with him, and he promptly fell in love.

Initially we thought we’d have to rehome them together as they had been together since they were babies. Over time Justin and Harry started to form a very close bond (a little too close at times, with Harry getting a bit amorous, despite being fixed). Inquiries came in thick and fast for Mr Moo, but none for Justin – apparently tabbies are seen as “plain”. Mr Moo was becoming more independent, and when our friends offered to adopt him we felt like it was a match made in heaven. Mr Moo has a new sister (also called Moo!) and Justin is going to stay with us and his boyfriend Harry. He’s an absolute darling and we are completely in love with him.

A disclaimer – Justin B wasn’t named by us, but we can’t think of a better name for him! Any suggestions are welcome!

The Gag Reel

With pet photography, I often shoot in “burst” mode, about five or six shots at once to make sure I nail the photo. Every now and then I’ll snap a frame that has me in absolute hysterics. I work really hard to capture certain expressions during a shoot so it’s so great when you get something completely unplanned and unexpected. I’ve been saving them for a blog post for a while now – one day I’ll hopefully have enough for a book.  I hope these bring a smile to your face like they do to mine.

Percy the Chihuahua – be very afraid!

Tom the Poodle has had a looooong day

Otis the mini foxie is having a tough time

Grandma Giggles had a hard time keeping her outfit from falling over her face. I loved this one so much I’ve got it hanging in my office

Little PK the Griffon gets caught mid head shake

Scrumpy is not letting out an almighty howl, I think he was just starting a yawn

And finally – my boys and their tongues

Tracey’s Girls

Tracey was the winner of my Melbourne pet photography Winter Giveaway, and it was just lovely to meet her gorgeous pets.

First up, there’s Mia, the cheeky black pug. Mia was a puppy farm dog and despite her terrible start in life, she’s a happy well adjusted girl who is adored by all. Mia loves a cuddle and a treat and was just full of smiles.

Next up is Gemma, the beautiful Red Kelpie. Gemma is a very smart dog, with a very gentle nature. Gemma was also rescued from a bad start to life, and she’s spoiled rotten, just how it should be.

Abby is a pug/cavalier cross and she’s a darling girl, incredibly photogenic and with a sweet personality. Abby’s eyes are just to die for!

And last but certainly not least is Kodie! Kodie is a stunning girl who just loves her cuddles. She was a little camera shy at first but we still got some lovely shots of her. When I left she was snuggled under the blanket with Tracey’s daughter, sound asleep.

The cats didn’t think I should leave without a few shots of them as well – say hello to Cleo and Chester! Chester planted himself on my lap and was very reluctant to let me leave, he’s a giant smooch.

These are a few of my favourite things!

Since starting my business last year, I’ve met so many wonderful people, and I’ve been introduced to some awesome pet related businesses here in Melbourne. Today I thought I’d share a few of them with you. Please note that none of these are paid endorsements – they are businesses that I genuinely love.

Paws and Co.

Run by the lovely Natalia, Paws and Co stock luxury and designer pet items. My cat Harry is sporting one of their gorgeous leather collars, and it’s the only he’s had that’s lasted more than a month, in fact it has lasted almost six! Harry is also a huge fan of their catnip mice, which have a textured surface that is great for their teeth. They are also incredibly durable, months later and they are yet to get a hole or rip in them.

Paws and Co also have a great Facebook page, and their customer service is top notch. They also run a “VIPaws” competition each month with great prizes. I highly recommend a visit to their website, but be warned, there are so many pretty things there it’s hard to choose!

K9 Direct

Got a cold pooch this winter? K9 Direct have you covered. They have a fantastic range of doggy jumpers, jackets, and heat pads, as well as a great range of doggy toys, beds and show accessories. My personal favourite is the Leopard Print Hoody – sadly no human sized ones! The owner of K9 Direct, Nadene, is also a very generous individual who gave a percentage of her profits to Saffron on the Hill dog rescue last month.

I Can See Dog Car Seat

These beautiful handmade doggy car seats come in a beautiful range of fabrics and can be used as a bed too! They are also an incredibly generous business who donate seats to rescue groups on a regular basis. If you want your dog to travel in style check them out – they are custom made so you can be sure your pup will be the coolest on the block.

Pet Stock

Gosh I love to shop at Pet Stock! The stores are all clean, well stocked, with friendly, helpful staff who actually know their products. They run regular pet adoption days and do not sell puppies or kittens at their stores. They also provide grooming and vet services as well as obedience school. If you ever need to visit a pet shop make it Pet Stock, it’s the responsible choice.

And here are a few other links to pet related things I love:

Gypsy Ju – Keeping her Eye on Melbourne

Follow Gypsy and Poppet, two of the most stylish dogs in town, as they explore Melbourne and review dog friendly cafes, parks, and more. Gypsy and Poppet also happen to rate 10/10 on the cuteness scale.

Pet Rescue

If you’re looking to adopt your next pet but don’t know where to start, Pet Rescue is the best. They have listings from hundreds of rescue groups across Australia and the most amazing part is that they are completely not-for-profit.

Four Legs Good

I’m cheating a bit on this one because it’s based in NZ, but photos of gorgeous pets are universal. Nick writes about responsible pet ownership and all the highs and lows it brings. He also does a great round up every Friday of reader’s photos and posts them – it’s the first thing I read on a Friday morning and it never fails to bring a smile to my face. Nick is also the owner of the gorgeous Phoebe, Connor and Merrick who I photographed earlier this year.

Thanks for reading everyone – if you like this post why not share it on Facebook and help spread the word about these great businesses.
