Stella and Boots

My job spoils me sometimes, this weekend I had the honour of photographing these two stunning dogs on a stunning property in rural Victoria – it doesn’t get better than that! Big brother Boots kept a watchful eye on Stella at all times…while she ran rings around him.

Rock the Shot September Challenge

This shot is my submission for this month’s Rock the Shot Challenge {www.rocktheshotforum.com}. I think it might be my favourite shot I’ve ever taken. The blissed out expression on Justin’s face gives me warm fuzzies every time I look at it. For me it’s a reminder to enjoy those small moments.

Shot using my 35mm f1.8 lens at 1.8, with natural light diffused by a net curtain. For processing I used a combination of my own editing plus a toned down version of The Coffee Shop Blog’s Buttercream black and white action.

Rock the Shot Forum is a fantastic resource for all levels of photographers, with some amazing interviews, giveaways and articles. Click the picture below to check them out

Oliver all grown up

When I first met Oliver he was nine weeks old and had just gone to live with his new Mum and Dad. He was so small that he could be picked up in one hand! Now he’s a big strong boy who still loves to play, and who could beat anyone at a game of tug-o-war. I left with a sore arm and a full memory card, his shoot was so much fun.

I think it’s really important to always have up to date images of your pets – it’s so lovely to see the changes they go through. Puppies grow up so incredibly fast!

Oliver at nine weeks and at just over a year – what a difference!

A very serious game of tug of war

To give some perspective, these sticks are exactly the same size – it’s just Oli who has gotten bigger!

Oliver’s family have gorgeous retro furniture, and he was quite happy to ham it up

All tuckered out

HeARTS Speak

When we wanted to adopt a kitten, I remember people telling me not to get a shelter cat because he would be “defective” or “unpredictable”. I’ve seen people sneer or turn up their noses at cats and dogs who might be missing an eye or a limb, or even worse say nasty things. There’s also a terrible stigma that rescue animals are “flawed” in some way, especially those who have come from bad backgrounds, when nothing could be further from the truth. The love you get from a rescue dog or cat is something that will touch your heart forever.

These two fill my heart with happiness every single day, my two rescue boys

So with that said, I’m thrilled to announce that I have qualified as a Service Professional Member of HeARTS Speak. HeARTS Speak are a global organisation who partner with photographers, designers, and artists to help promote adoption of animals from rescues and shelters as well as reducing the amount of animals who are unnecessarily euthenised in shelters each year. They also offer grants to help support photographers such as myself who dedicate time to shelter and rescue work. I’m so pleased to be part of an organisation of like minded people, and I’m excited to see what opportunities this will help create with my rescue work. It’s my hope that through HeARTS Speak we can change public perception of adoption for good.
