Gidget & Ralph

One of the biggest honours is when another photographer hires you – we are super fussy and have very specific ideas in our heads about what a photo “should” look like. We all have different shooting and editing styles as well, so when Karina asked me to photograph her and her dogs, I was stoked. Karina is a talented wedding photographer who I met at a recent workshop, and she is working on revamping her site. As part of that, she wanted to include photos of herself with Gidget and Ralph – two big bouncy Dalmatians who are just big bundles of joy. To top it off, Karina is also gorgeous and super easy to work with.

We had our session down in Point Addis, just around the corner from Bells Beach in Torquay. Bells is a huge surf beach, but Point Addis was lovely and calm. There were so many exciting new smells for the dogs – I was lucky that Karina’s partner took on the role of dog wrangler so well – dancing, singing, running around, and being generally awesome to work with.

What made this session really lovely was seeing the connection that Ralph and Karina had – Ralph has been a family member for eleven years, and the bond these two share was so obvious. At eleven, Ralph still thinks he’s a puppy, he was so full of beans. Gidget didn’t stop for a second – at three years old she’s still a puppy too. The great part about this shoot was that I was given creative control – being told “I trust you” by another photographer is always awesome to hear. Thanks so much Karina for choosing me for your shoot!

Thor – The Gentle Giant

Since I started my business, I’ve come across so many amazing pet owners. Pet owners who treat their pet as a member of the family. People who don’t give up on their pet just because of a couple of health issues – people who actually do the hard work and turn a sad rescue dog into a sweet and loyal pet. Often, it’s so easy to turn our back on a challenge, and so many people will overlook a dog with health or behavior issues, not realising that often all that is required is some love, discipline, and understanding. It always warms my heart and I feel so honoured to meet these people – it always restores my faith in the world.

Beautiful Thor had a tough start to life – he went through two other homes before finally being adopted by his family. Fiercely protective and loyal, Thor is your typical big bouncy Ridgeback Cross – but despite his size, he loved nothing more than climbing up on the couch for cuddles with his mum and dad . Every time he looks at them you can see the love pouring out of his eyes. He also had this amazing range of expressions – from goofy smile, to your typical “treat” face, to a serious and sultry look. Thor suffers from arthritis, but due to the amazing care he gets, he lives a happy, full, and active life.

Thank you so much to Toni and Craig for choosing me to photograph your boy – you guys have done an amazing job with him and he couldn’t be in a more loving and wonderful household.

Home Time

This week has been a great one, and it just got even better – my gorgeous foster boy Bob has a forever home! He’s going to the best people possible, and will have lots of doggy and kitty friends to play with and keep him entertained. I will miss him so much, he’ll be taking a little piece of my heart when he goes – but I’m beyond thrilled that he’s going to such a wonderful home.

To celebrate, here’s a Bob retrospective – I will miss his cheeky little face so much 🙂

Ellie – Sweeter Than Candy

Ellie – thirteen years old, spoilt rotten, loved more than anything in this world – this little girl may be small, but she takes up so much room in her mumma’s heart.

Ellie has been with her mum since she was ten weeks old, and she has Syringomyelia – a condition which means Ellie needs that little bit extra of TLC. Ellie has the most beautiful, gentle face and the sweetest soul. She also has a really cheeky side, halfway through she decided she wouldn’t respond to the word “treat”, so Mel and I kept saying “cheeeeeeeeese” and “poooooooooork” like a pair of idiots.

We had a lovely shoot with lots of laughter – Ellie thought it was great being so spoilt. Her beautiful nature is so clear in these pictures, you can see the love she has for Mel (and treats!) written all over her pretty face. Thank you so much Mel for choosing me to photograph Ellie – it was a privilege.

Nine Reasons to Adopt a Black Cat

Did you know that black cats are among the hardest to adopt out? People have some strange ideas about black cats, and so often they get overlooked. I recently fosted three black cats, and have photographed dozens more – so today I’m going to give you nine reasons why you should adopt a black cat, along with photographic evidence.

1.) They are excellent photographers

Nobody knows why, but they have an innate ability with cameras

2.) They are very tech savvy, and love to help with your IT issues

3.) They are very snappy dressers, and look good in all colours

4.) In addition to their IT skills, they also love to help out with the laundry
